Antique Double sided mourning locket and chain necklace, Victorian
A rare and tragically beautiful antique Victorian era mourning locket necklace.
The locket is a large size, elaborately designed in a rich golden gilt metal, it has a floral design engraving to the front and back and is a double sided locket opening on both sides.
To one side there is a glazed compartment containing a lock of plaited light brown hair to the other side beneath a second glazed compartment there is an old photograph of a lady holding a young girl.
Next to the photograph there is a personal engraving which reads:
My beloved child, L. A. Griffiths
Died 27th July 1865
Aged 17 months
Such a sad yet beautiful mourning piece, largely untouched since the mid-Victorian era.
It comes on an antique fancy link gilt bronze chain necklace and has a large integral bale.
Condition:
Good used condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, wear to the gilding particularly at the bale, the chain is mostly a bronze tone with loss of gilt.
