A rare and tragically beautiful antique Victorian era mourning locket necklace.

The locket is a large size, elaborately designed in a rich golden gilt metal, it has a floral design engraving to the front and back and is a double sided locket opening on both sides.

To one side there is a glazed compartment containing a lock of plaited light brown hair to the other side beneath a second glazed compartment there is an old photograph of a lady holding a young girl.

Next to the photograph there is a personal engraving which reads:

My beloved child, L. A. Griffiths
Died 27th July 1865
Aged 17 months

Such a sad yet beautiful mourning piece, largely untouched since the mid-Victorian era.

It comes on an antique fancy link gilt bronze chain necklace and has a large integral bale.

Good used condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, wear to the gilding particularly at the bale, the chain is mostly a bronze tone with loss of gilt.

Approx measurements:
2.25" pendant length
1.5" pendant width
16" chain length
