Antique Victorian Vulcanite Cross and chain necklace
An attractive and unusual antique Victorian Vulcanite Cross and chain necklace.
The necklace features large, chunky, fancy mariner style Links, interlocking along the length and it fastens with a barrel clasp which is a later addition.
The cross has been added to the chain and there is a link that has been modified as a drop for the pendant, this has been secured by cotton by its original owner.
Vulcanite was first invented or discovered in 1839 by Charles Goodyear and it is a compound made up by mixing together rubber and sulphur to produce vulcanised rubber.
It was a popular alternative to Whitby Jet as it was easier to source and not to mention cheaper, now original Vulcanite pieces are highly sought after and collectable gems, not unlike this incredible Victorian chain.
It's dark Aesthetic also made it a go to choice for mourning jewellery.
Condition:
Good used condition overall with some signs of use and wear, Vulcanite still a good black shade with minor lightening, clasp a replacement, link modified as a bale secured with cotton.
