Antique Victorian Whitby Jet Mourning locket, AEI, hairwork
A very interesting and unique Victorian era mourning locket.
It is made from Whitby Jet with an intricately carved front, the locket reads MAS from MRWS, Kilton, 1875.
There was an ironstone mine opened in the village of Kilton in 1875 and there were also a number of fatalities that same year in Kilton due to mining accidents.
This locket possibly has links to the mine or one of the fatalities that took place there that year.
It has a smooth reverse and a black enamelled bale for hanging from your favourite choker or necklace.
Internally the locket has space for two photographs or tiny mementos but it is currently empty.
Condition:
Fair used condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, some marks and wear to reverse, there is a chip to the jet near the locket opening seen from the side.
